How to Convert Your British Gas Bill to Excel

5 minute read · UK Energy Bills · Last updated September 2026

British Gas is the UK's largest energy supplier, and their bills are sent to millions of households and businesses every month. Despite being fairly straightforward in layout, extracting the data from a British Gas PDF bill into a spreadsheet still requires manually copying figures - or until now, at least.

This guide shows you how to convert your British Gas PDF bill into a structured Excel file in seconds, with all your usage figures, charges, and meter readings neatly organised and ready to use.

What does the Excel file contain?

The downloaded Excel file has two sheets. The first sheet summarises your account details - name, address, account number, balance, and total due. The second sheet contains your billing period data - one row per charge period, with columns for usage, unit rate, standing charge, meter readings, VAT, and total. This makes it straightforward to build a running log of your energy costs by converting each monthly bill and pasting the rows together.

Can I use this for a business account?

Yes. BillConverter works with both residential and business British Gas accounts. The bill format is similar for both and the tool handles either without any changes needed on your part.

What if my bill covers both electricity and gas?

British Gas dual fuel bills include both electricity and gas charges. BillConverter extracts both fuels separately, so in your Excel output each fuel type appears on its own rows in the Billing Periods sheet, clearly labelled. You can filter by fuel type to analyse electricity and gas independently.

Is my personal data safe?

Your PDF is processed entirely in server memory and deleted immediately after your Excel file is sent to you. We do not store, log, or share any data from your bills. Read our full privacy policy at billconverter.co.uk/privacy.
